Soil Monitoring
Buraq Integrated Solutions offers multiparameter, smart soil sensor designed using advanced measurement techniques to accurately monitor volumetric water content, bulk electrical conductivity (EC), and soil temperature. Featuring an SDI-12 output, it integrates seamlessly with a wide range of data loggers. With shorter rods, it is particularly well-suited for challenging or high-density soil conditions.
Benefits and Features
- Larger sample volume for reduced measurement error
- Automatic correction for soil texture and electrical conductivity effects
- Provides reliable soil-water content estimates across a broad range of mineral soils
- Versatile, three-parameter sensor measuring dielectric permittivity, EC, and temperature
Technical Overview
The soil sensor includes two stainless-steel rods connected to a fully encapsulated epoxy-sealed circuit board, ensuring long-term durability in harsh soil environments. A shielded cable attaches the sensor to compatible data loggers.
The sensor measures the following parameters:
Propagation time
Signal attenuation
Temperature
From these raw measurements, it derives:
Dielectric permittivity
Volumetric water content
Bulk electrical conductivity
Its attenuation-based correction compensates for loss effects during reflection detection, enabling accurate water-content measurements in soils with EC ≤ 8 dS/m—without requiring soil-specific calibration.
A precision thermistor located near the probe rods provides dependable temperature readings. When installed horizontally, the soil sensor delivers soil-temperature measurements at the same depth as water-content measurements, ensuring depth-consistent data. When installed vertically or at an angle, temperature readings correspond to the region near the rods’ entry point into the epoxy body.
